Training Weekend 23rd - 25th May 2014

This May a training weekend will be held in Emerald and will cover plant ID, weed control, wildlife care, monitoring, water watch, spotlighting, creating a management plan and more!

There will be a range of speakers from various backgrounds to help you understand your backyard and what you can do to help manage it!

In November last year a Spring Training Weekend was held for the local community in conjunction with; Yarra Ranges and Cardinia Shire Councils, Melbourne Water, PPWCMA, Yarra Ranges Landcare Network, Upper Yarra Landcare Network, Middle Yarra Landcare Network and Southern Ranges Environment Alliance.

The training covered various topics and this May we will be expanding upon and introducing new topics in the field of bushland management.

This Autumn training 2014, we have some return speakers including Darcy Duggan covering indigenous and weed plant identification, Mark Cairns and his animals with fauna identification and the situation of Australia’s fauna species.

Jessica Becher from Puffing Billy will be working with Yvonne Earnshaw and community samplers from Waterwatch covering Aquatic macro invertebrates, waterway planning and how this relates to Platypus health.

Navi Valdes will present findings from her pest animal work with Puffing Billy and the linking in with the work Cardinia Shire have been doing at Emerald Lake Park and extending works conducted by EcoPlan at the November Spring Session and exploring feritting techniques to control rabbits.

We are looking forward to learning from Darcy this time around how to do some practical weed mapping and monitoring techniques that also includes assessing the health of the biodiversity of the site you are working on or about to embark on.

  • Plant ID (including weeds)
  • Weed Management
  • Management Plan Development

Location

Wombat Corner Camp, 62 Emerald Lake Road, Emerald.  Visit www.hallsoutdoored.com.au/wombat-corner for additional venue information.

This site will enable a practical experience as it adjoins Emerald Lake Park where native flora and fauna is abundant as well as the threats and pressures from an active recreational reserve that accommodate thousands of people every year. It is here that Puffing Billy also stops off on its trek to Gembrook.

While the activities will enable you to apply the learning to your own property or area, the use of the local reserve, Wattle Creek and surrounding bushland will help translate the theory presented indoors into practical examples in the field.

Children can either join in with the adults to participate in the activities or separate off and enjoy a range of children activities designed for a  variety of age groups supervised by adults.
